Mise-en-scene recreation practical task
1) Get into groups of up to four. Note: although the planning and filming can be done as a group, all students MUST edit their OWN version of the chosen scene. Make a note of who you are working with.
- Scream: the killer reveal scene.
-Zoha, Kaye
2) Create a plan of how you will do the recreation using CLAMPS. For each aspect of mise-en-scene, work out how you will recreate it as accurately as possible to the original.
Costume: A blue cardigan/jumper for Jill, black dress for Sydney and a white polo shirt for the first murderer.
Lighting: Low-key lighting wherever we can
Actor placement, movement, expression: At the begining the first murderer will be holidng a knife at the actors throat and have her in a choke hold as she tries to escape by grasping at the actors arms.
Make-up and hair: Fake blood on the actors and messy hair. The fake blood will be made out of food dye and honey.
Props: Fake knife and blood.
Setting: A corridor and a room. We will use a red card and stick it on the walls to recreate the red coloured walls.
4) Film your scene using one of your phones - we have phone tripods you can sign out from Mr Ray in DF06 if you need one. Alternatively, you can sign out a Canon DSLR if you'd like a more cinematic experience.
We used our phones to record with a tripod.
5) Edit your video to recreate 30-60 seconds of the original clip as accurately as possible. Add music if it is in the original scene.
6) Export your finished video, upload it to YouTube and post it to your blog along with a 100-word explanation of your work.
My group and I chose to recreate the movie Scream during the killer scene reveal. This is because the mise-en-scene goes along very well with the plot. For example, the red walls connote violence, which reflects the whole plot. Furthermore, the reveal is also unexpected and shocking, as before the victim (Jill) was worried about Sidney, but in the end, Sidney turned out to be the killer. We tried to use realistic props, such as a fake knife or a mask that was similar to the actual movie, to recreate the scene as best as we could. Additionally, we used fake blood, just like in the real scene, which I found was an important part of the mise-en-scene as it emphasises that the movie is a horror movie.
