Film Poster Analysis

 Blade Runner
In this movie poster, it is evident that the genre of the movie is sci-fi and action. This can be seen in the tagline, a verbal code, "Man has made his match... now it's his problem." This tells us that the movie is about how "man" (humanity) has met its "match", meaning that humanity has met another species that is possibly extraterrestrial. The word "match" further suggests how it could be a battle. The idea of a battle is further emphasised through the prop of a gun being held by a character, showing us how violence may be the answer to this war. Furthermore, the setting of the high-tech buildings at the bottom already introduces us to this sci-fi society where humanity has advanced, as the black and white/bluish colour scheme of the buildings connotes to technology and robotics. Additionally, the high key lighting emerging from the man in contrast with the dark and space-like background may symbolise how this man is the protagonist as he will be the light and hope that saves Earth from something unknown from space. This leads me to believe that this movie could be made for most audiences as its a hollywood movie that wants profit from as much as people they can get to come. The genre of sci-fi is overall intersting for most audiences.

Scary Movie 2
In this poster, it is communicated to us that the movie's genre comedic parody of conventional horror movies. Firstly, this is evident through the actor's facial expressions, which seem overexaggerated, indicating that the poster is intended to be a mockery of horror movies, as the facial expression makes it difficult to take it seriously. Furthermore, the simple vocabulary, a verbal code, of the title further shows how this is a mockery of conventional horror films, as it simplifies the complexity of what horror movies are usually like, showing us how the idea behind the movie is to show how horror movies shouldn't be taken seriously, as they usually are. In addition, the intertextuality on the female actor's t-shirt "I heart dead people" references a horror movie that was created before this one, as the original quote was "I see dead people". This version of the quote mocks the original by making it more stupid, which is comedic as it's very contrasting to the original quote. Additionally, the sans-serif font on the title emphasises how this movie's genre is comedic, as the font connotes softness and approachability, unlike typical horror movies. The use of intertexuality and comedy shows how this is targeted towards young adults or teenagers as they would understand refrences recent to this movie.

UZAK
I think this film is about the main character mourning a loss due to the overwhelming low-key lighting in comparison to the high-key lighting, connoting how misery is taking over the protagonist. Furthermore, the protagonist is seen to look like a silhouette rather than a person with features, showing how their depression and sadness from mourning have reduced them to a shadow of society rather than a functioning member, which emphasises the toll of his loss. Additionally,  the character in the poster (protagonist) has his head bowed, connoting respect to possibly his lost one. These dark themes and their connotations clearly represent how this movie is targeted towards adults. Furthermore, the text "Grand Prix Cannes" is a festival where independent films are shown. Festivals like this are made for a more niche audience therefore, the fact that this movie was shown there shows us how this movie is meant towards a niche audience.

Im Not Scared
This movie poster communicates that this movie is a thriller, as seen in the tagline "The award-winning thriller" This non-verbal code tells us this is a thriller directly and even emphasises how it is different from other thrillers as it's won an award. From the title, we can assume that the movie's plot is about mystery, as the poster shows a picture of a boy, who may be the main character, as he's the only one in the poster, looking down into a dark pit from above. This contrasting image of the sky and the ground connotes mystery as the boy is exposing this darkness to light, which may reflect the plot of him discovering something unusual or perhaps a dark crime and exposing it. Considering this, I assume that the film is targeted at adults due to its mysterious and dark connotations, which may connote crime or horror. Furthermore, the solid sans serif font of the title connotes a sense of seriousness, reflecting how the movie will be harsh and demanding.

Sin City
This poster communicates to us that this film is an action and crime movie due to the props used by the characters, as there are guns used by three characters, which connote crime and fighting. Furthermore, the words in the title (non-verbal code) "Sin City" connote a cluster of sins and immoral desires, like lust or murder, in a singular place which emphasises how the crime of "Sin" needs to be cleared away by the protagonists who are behind the title that are holding the guns which suggests how they will work as crime fighting heros to get rid of evil. Towards the back of the characters, a woman is shown, the possible antagonist, as she is behind heroic-looking characters, wearing sexualised clothing. This shows how this film is intended to be targeted at an older and more mature adult audience.

Pirates Of the Caribbean
Colour scheme: Murky green colour, along with brown, connotes earthiness and vintage

Lighting: lowkey lighting suggests drama and secrecy

The characters being pirates suggests this movie is under the fantasy genre and tells us this movie is aimed at younger children as they are interested in fantasy stories and unserious fiction.

The characters all have a stern expression, which connotes that the movie will be intense, interesting and full of action. Furthermore, the serif font emphasised the fantasy genre as it
connotes a sense of playfulness and magic, which emphasises how this movie is targeted towards children who like to be entertained through fiction and unrealistic things.
The ensemble cast connotes equality and friendship for this adventure, which effectively targets an audience of children, as the idea of friendship is appealing for a younger/family audience. The tagline suggests to us that this movie may be about finding treasure, as the tagline suggests they are looking for a dead man's treasure in his chest. This suggests a sense of mystery as they would have no hints as to where this chest would be, as the owner is dead.

Bride and Prejudice
Make-up: The woman on the right has a full face of makeup on which could suggest that she is dressed up for an important event. She reinforces the stereotype that women should always look good for any event.

The high-key lighting could connote happiness and hope. The fact that there is no low-key lighting suggests this is a film of romance or comedy rather than horror or crime. In addition, the review at the top further enforces this (non-verbal code).
The two male and female characters at the front, in the spotlight, suggest they are the protagonists and possibly love interests, which leads me to believe this movie is aimed at young adults who are female as stereotypically they would be interested in romance.
Additionally, the title suggests this movie's plot may be about romance and the struggles of marriage, possibly due to opposing cultures, as seen in the background, which shows India and America.

Million Dollar Baby
In this movie poster, we can see a female character in the centre as well as two males behind her. The fact that she is in the centre with these two males behind her suggests to us that she is the protagonist of the plot. Through this, stereotypes are subverted as she leads the movie rather than a man doing so. Furthermore, she is shown with a stern face reflecting her seriousness rather than elegance, which further subverts typical stereotypes. Overall, this shows how the movie is targeted towards females who are independent. Additionally, the low-key lighting suggests how this movie is a drama as it connotes mystery and suspense. Her clothes, a sports outfit, and her muscular figure tell us that this movie will also be related to sports. Overall, I believe that the plot will be about this woman and her journey in whatever sport she does, as she is the centre of the spotlight in this film.
