1) Find a distinctive still image and write an analysis of the mise-en-scene. Use each of the aspects you've learned in the lesson.

Here, the use of casual clothing suggests that this plot takes place in a modern society. This is further emphasised with the woman's bright coloured hair, as in a modern society, that would be more acceptable compared to older eras. Her bright hair may also connote that perhaps the film is a comedy, as it's bright and unique. The use of the low-key lighting suggests that perhaps the two characters have their own mysteries and secrets. Furthermore, the actors are positioned close up together, connoting that they will form a bond together, which could be romantic. Additionally, they are holding party cups, which tells us that they are at a party, which could suggest to the audience that they don't know each other and met in this setting.

2) Find TWO film or TV extracts on YouTube from different genres (e.g. horror, sci-fi, costume drama). Embed them in your blogpost and write a comparison of the mise-en-scene in each.

I have chosen clips from the movies Black Panther and Mean Girls. The clothing is one thing that distinguishes their genres, as in Mean Girls, the characters are seen wearing feminine clothing, whereas in Black Panther, they look like they are dressed for a fight. Furthermore, the actors' actions are also key in this, as in Mean Girls, we see the characters having a conversation with typical topics teenage girls would talk about, as well as some comedy, whereas in Black Panther, two characters are fighting, which connotes that this movie is under the action genre. The setting also differs a lot, as in the Mean Girls clip, it takes place in a school cafeteria, which is a typical place within high school where gossip is spread, whereas the Black Panther clip takes place on a cliff, which is unusual in normal life, suggesting how this movie is an action film. This further emphasises the difference in genre as both are in typical settings for their genres. Both clips use high-key lighting to perhaps suggest that there is no bad blood between the characters who are being focused on yet this shows how lighting could be used as an action code.
