Cinematography: blog analysis tasks

Find the opening sequence to a film or TV drama of your choice on YouTube and embed the video in a blogpost called 'Cinematography blog tasks'.

1) Write an analysis of the cinematography in the opening sequence. Highlight your use of media language and try to cover camera shots, angles and movement using the terminology we have learned in lessons.

Firstly, there is a zoom in onto Deadpool ,who we now assume is the main character as his importance is first highlighted. However, the scene cuts to a long shot of multiple men coming out of portals with suits and weapons - which are props and costumes used to signify that they are ready to fight, which creates an enigma code because we question who will win. Also, this creates an action code as are promised fighting. Furthermore, a long shot, high angle is used to show Deadpool laying on the floor next to a dead body. Unlike the usual connotations of a high angle shot, weakness and innocence, this shot is used to humour the context as it reflects him as laid back in a serious situation. During the fighting scenes, long shots are used frequently to fully expose and show the violence to the audience. Towards the end, there is a zoom in onto Deadpool's weapon which reflects his dominance through his violent acts. This also answers the lingering question on whether he will win against the other men as we see his power against them.

2) How does the camerawork give the audience clues about the setting, narrative and character?

We follow the main character whilst he fights (tracking shot) which reflects his dominance and causality as we see it doesn't take him too long to fight the group of men. The frequent long shots fully display the violence which connotes that this is an action movie and also introduces us the setting which looks isolated and desolate.

Secondly, find and analyse one film or TV still image. Add the image to your blogpost.

3) Analyse the camera shot/angle in the image and what it communicates to the audience. Remember to highlight the media terminology you use.

In this movie poster, a medium close up is used to focus us on her body language
(smiling whilst clutching the phone) which connotes excitement and happiness. This communicates to the audience that this is a romance movie but although we are focused on the girl, the background is dark which juxtaposes with her and the high key lighting. This suggests how although she's focused on her happiness, just as we are made to through the camera shot, sadness will eventually come.
